I will put the number 58 on my helmet for Sic”

Ducati’s star rider chatted with his fans on the Dainese website about everything, from his desire to win another world title to his intention of keeping Simoncelli’s memory alive, what he will do when he gives up racing, his favourite helmet, his religious beliefs and children

Valentino Rossi gave his fans a very special Christmas present by joining them in a live stream session on the Dainese.com website and answering their questions. It was a friendly, amusing session, which included everything from his racing, his future, his personal life and his religious beliefs. His first wish for 2012 was naturally to have a more competitive Ducati: “It has been a very tough year. We didn’t have much fun either. I hope to be competitive again in MotoGP next year and that the new Desmosedici performs well – he stated – We have been working very hard. There are a lot of ideas we want to try out and we are all very curious to see what actually happens starting with the first test in Sepang at the end of January. We will have a different bike there and we will find out whether we are competitive or not”.

GETTING FIT — Valentino spoke about his fitness programme: “I will be on holiday until January, but I will go to the gym and do a bit of weight training and aerobic activity. Then I shall start running and doing a lot of sport, above all with motorbikes and go-karts and things. It will be a fun way of getting fit”.

SAFETY — The issue of safety was one of the most common questions: “The level of safety has increased massively, both on and off the track. There have been big improvements from crash helmets to other types of protective gear, even airbags, but the main point is that people who ride motorbikes must always be very careful because it is dangerous. The dangers are everywhere and tend to be caused by others”.

LIFE AFTER RACING — Vale does not want to hang up his helmet quite yet: “There’s a while to go before I become a calm 40-year-old. I would like to race cars a bit. I still like to wear a racing suit. I have always loved rally driving ever since I was a child, as my dad Graziano used to take me to watch it all the time, and so I might have a few races there”.

32-year-old Valentino Rossi surrounded by his fans. Reuters

HIS LIMITS — “I think that I have often gone beyond my limits. Sometimes during races it worked out well and on other occasions it didn’t and I fell. You have to be very careful”.

HIS DREAM — Then he spoke about a special wish: “My dream in MotoGP is to win a 10th world title”.

HIS HELMETS — “Of all the helmets I’ve used during my career, the one I like most is the latest one, the one I’m still wearing, or also the one with the face from Mugello in 2008. I will continue using the helmet dedicated to Sic for the winter tests. After that I’ll go back to wearing my usual helmet again and I’ll put something on it to remember him, perhaps a ’58′ somewhere. The idea of the sun and moon came from Aldo Drudi: I started with the sun and then decided to divide it into two parts and then I put the moon too”.

CRT — “We would like to continue racing in MotoGP with today’s bikes, the hitech bikes, but we will have to start racing with less expensive, lower-performance bikes, bikes that are maybe a bit more fun to ride and that could lead to more exciting battles. The hope is that in MotoGP we can start seeing more races like those from a few years ago. I think that the CRT could be the future of motor-bike racing: they are fast and they will get better. At the moment they are not very competitive, but they could be a good idea for the future”.

HIGHS AND LOWS — The worst moment was probably when I broke my leg at Mugello last year. It was definitely the most painful. The best moment was my first win with the Yamaha at Welkom in South Africa (in 2004), but the battle with Stoner at Laguna Seca (in 2008, with his famous overtaking at the Corkscrew) and the battle with Lorenzo in Barcelona (in 2009) were also great moments”.

TT — With regard to the chance of him imitating Agostini, Dunlop and other greats for the past and winning a TT race on the Isle of Man, Vale was rather sceptical: “No, I don’t think I’ll be trying that out. I find it really exciting, but it is too dangerous for me”.

SUPERBIKE — “I don’t think that I’ll have my own team in Superbike. I don’t really like the idea and I could only perhaps change my mind if my brother, who it seems would like to race, joined me. However it would be fun to race for a couple of seasons in Superbike, but let’s see how competitive I can still be in MotoGP. We’ll see in a few years”.

CHILDREN — “When will you see a Valentino Rossi Junior? I don’t know, but it’s not the right moment yet”.

RELIGION — “Yes, I think I believe in God”.

THE 1000CC BIKES — “It was more fun with the 1000cc bikes. You had to be really sensitive in the way you used your wrist. Much better”.

MUSIC — “I like everything: rock, pop, disco music, and Italian music too”.

FEDERER — “Federer? I am a great fan of his and also a friend. I really like him – he’s the most elegant there is”.

The MotoGP GOAT doesn’t get a load of time to throw a rally car round with a co-driver barking out calls but let’s face it, he’s got a knack of being super fast on in any kind of race format. Over the course of the weekend, Valentino come a close second (in 2 race formats) to multiple WRC champ Seb Loeb and even beat the ace in the 2 stages he topped. Behind him sat last year’s winner Dindo Capello and WRC great Dani Sordo.

Thousands of mourners have gathered in the streets of Coriano, Italy to bid farewell to the MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli who died in an accident at the Malaysian Grand Prix Sunday.

The 24-year-old’s hearse arrived at the Santa Maria Assunta church in the central Italian town just before 3pm local time.

Family, members of Team Gresini and various guests including seven-time world champions Valentino Rossi attended the funeral while an estimated 6,000 fans gathered outside to watch the service on big screens.

Simoncelli lost control of his bike on the exit of Turn 11 and was hit first by Colin Edwards and then by Rossi, knocking his helmet off and causing “serious trauma” to his head, neck and chest. He was taken to the medical centre for treatment but died from his injuries.

Amateur footage from Sepang on Sunday has showed Malaysian MotoGP marshals dropping a stretcher carrying the fatally wounded Marco Simoncelli. The Gresini rider, who had fallen from his bike and was hit by Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi, succumbed to his injuries in the circuit medical centre.

Although the moment was never seen during the official television broadcast of the cancelled race, footage captured by a fan from the grandstand at the final corner – uploaded to video sharing website YouTube – clearly portrays marshals rushing the 24-year-old Italian towards an ambulance, only to drop the stretcher carrying him.

The race was stopped after four minutes when Simoncelli’s bike veered across the track at turn 11 into the path of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi.

The 24-year-old had his helmet knocked off and was hit by both other riders.

American rider Edwards also fell but escaped serious injury – while fellow Italian Rossi was able to return to the pits.

Simoncelli lay motionless on the track after the impact, while the race was immediately red-flagged.

At first officials were looking to restart the race before the extent of Simoncelli’s injuries became clear.

Honda rider Simoncelli first entered MotoGP for the 2010 season and won his first pole position at the Catalunya race in June this year.

Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi finished eight and ninth, respectively, in the German Grand Prix, after a lengthy three-way battle that also included Alvaro Bautista.

The entertainment and thrills provided by the battle on track, and the fact that Rossi raced from 16th on the grid to a 9th place finish, can’t hide what was ultimately another disappointing weekend for Ducati.

Valentino Rossi is now considering ditching his revised GP11.1 and switching back to the GP11 for the next round at Laguna Seca – the 800cc engine is not providing the power required for the new chassis.

Rossi said:
“For three races now we’ve used the new [GP11.1] bike to try to improve on the performance of the old one. I tried this bike with the 1000 engine and it was not so bad, but with the 800 engine the bike became very difficult to ride and I cannot load the front of the bike. So our performance at the last three races has been very, very bad. Especially in practice. And here it has been worse. So now we think maybe to come back to the normal, standard, bike. I don’t know when. We will decide after tomorrow.

And if Nicky Hayden was considering switching to the GP11.1 for Laguna Seca, then it is fair to say that he probably isn’t anymore.

Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden give their thoughts on the German MotoGP at Sachsenring below:

Nicky Hayden (Ducati Team) 8th
“I tried to go with that group in front of me off the start, but about the second or third lap I had a pretty big moment over the bumps in Turn 1 and they took off. From there I had a big battle with Bautista and Vale. It was fun, with a lot of overtaking, but battling for seventh place, 27 seconds back is hard for me to take at a track that I love and where I’ve been on the podium several times. I got to seventh toward the end and did my best lap, but they came with me. Bautista got me on my last lap, at the bottom of the hill. I re-passed him in the last corner, but he squared it up and nipped me to the line. It’s easy to say now, but I wish I raced the soft tyre. Thanks to the team and everybody that worked hard, but we had better hopes for today, going into Laguna.”

Valentino Rossi (Ducati Team) 9th
“Today went a little better. This morning in the warm-up we made a change to the setup that helped me to slightly improve the feeling compared to the very, very difficult practice sessions. After the opening laps, I realized that my pace was the same as that of Nicky and Bautista’s group, maybe even a little faster, but I had small glitches with the gearbox in the second half of the race. It was mainly hurting me in the last corner, when I changed to third, because the bike wheelied and it took me half the straightaway before I could put it back down. At the end of the race, I wanted to pass Nicky on the brakes into the first corner, where I was pretty strong, but instead even Bautista passed me on the straight. Anyway, that’s not where we want to be. We definitely improved today compared to Saturday, but we’re still too far back. We find the race setup late, and that makes everything more difficult, but in order to improve we have to try many things, which makes it easy to lose our direction. It’s understandable, because we don’t know this bike well and I think we have to take chances and try everything. Now we’ll analyze the data from this weekend and decide what to do for Laguna Seca.”

Vittoriano Guareschi (Team Manager)
“It was a very difficult weekend, as we had to work really hard until the last minute in order to put Valentino in a position to have a decent race. Of course our goals are different from our today’s results, but it’s positive that we were able to find a setup, even if it was at the last minute, that let Vale lap half a second faster than in qualifying. Nicky had a close call in the opening laps and lost a little confidence, but he regained it in the second half of the race, maintaining a good rhythm until the finish.”
